Within eHive each record and the related images have a licence assigned with details what you have permission to do with the content. Collectors (individuals and cultural organisations) often hold objects or images for which they do not own the copyright.

The licences that may be tied to an object and its images are:

Contents

No rights reserved

Licence code: cc0

The content has no known copyright restrictions and is in the public domain. Others may share and re-use this content. This licence is equivalent to Creative Commons 0 - content that has been marked as public domain.

Copyright status unknown

Licence code: unknown

The copyright holder for the content is unknown. Others may contact the account holder (the organisation or individual who catalogued the content on eHive) if they know more information. The account holder is always linked at the top of the record detail page.

Copyright Status unknown - orphaned work

Licence code: orphaned

The account holder (the organisation or individual who catalogued the content on eHive) has completed research to find the copyright holder of the content. Others may contact the account holder (the organisation or individual who catalogued the content on eHive) if they know more information. The account holder is linked at the top of the record detail page.

Creative Commons - Attribution

Licence code: cc-by

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.

This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon the content, even commercially, as long as they credit the account holder for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of Creative Commons licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with the content licensed under Attribution.

Creative Commons - Attribution - Share Alike

Licence code: cc-by-sa

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon the content even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit the account holder and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on the content will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.

Creative Commons - Attribution - No Derivatives

Licence code: cc-by-nd

This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to the account holder.

Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-commercial

Licence code: cc-by-nc

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon the content non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge the account holder and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-commercial - Share Alike

Licence code: cc-by-nc-sa

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon the content non-commercially, as long as they credit the account holder and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute the content just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on the content. All new work based on the content will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.

Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-commercial - No Derivatives

Licence code: cc-by-nc-nd

This license is the most restrictive of the six Creative Commons licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the “free advertising” license because it allows others to download the content and share them with others as long as they mention the account holder and link back to them, but they can’t change the content in any way or use the content commercially.

All rights reserved

Licence code: all-rights-reserved

Under this licence the copyright holder reserves all the rights provided by copyright law, such as distribution, performance, and creation of derivative works. Others may not copy, re-use or modify the content without the permission of the copyright holder. Contact the account holder for further information. Read more about the copyright claims process.
