Adding images

Images can be in jpg, tiff or bmp formats, or non-transparent gif or png formats. Each image should be less than 20MB.  Ideally the images should be no less than 1000 pixels along the longest side.  This is because all images in eHive can be clicked on to be viewed in a larger detailed view.  For more information please read our Finding Answers section.

Adding an image

To add an image to an object record go to the Images section of the Create screen (you must be logged in to add images).  Click on the Browse button to find the image in your computer or, alternatively, type in the file path and file name of the image then click on the Upload button to add the image.  This may take a few minutes depending on the size of the image.  A small version of the image will appear on the record once it has been uploaded.  You can type in a title for the image in the field provided.

Adding multiple images

To add another image to the object record click on Add Another Image in the Images section and repeat the process above.  If you add more than one image to an object record, the first image (the image at the top of the list) becomes the primary image.  The primary image is the image that displays automatically with your object record.  The remaining images are then available for you and other users to scroll through.  If you have more than one image uploaded to an object record, you will be able to reorder the images and select a new primary image by using the Reorder arrow buttons.  These buttons will only become enabled once you have uploaded more than one image.

Changing the cropped image

eHive creates two versions of the uploaded image: an original image and a square image. The original image is used for the images accompanying the object description: Object View and Zoom. The square image is used as a thumbnail image in screens such as Most Popular Objects or Most interesting Objects and on the public profile page for an account.

To change the cropped area of the Square Image, click ‘Re-crop Square Image’. You can then change the size and area of the cropped image. To change the size, click and drag the corners of the square. To change the area, click and drag at the centre of the square.

The default square cropping of portrait images keeps the top of the image. The default square cropping of landscape images keep the centre of the image. Previously the square cropping of portrait images kept the middle of the image. By looking through our existing portrait oriented images we keeping the top of the image gave a better result for far more images. Portrait oriented images are often of people, so the new cropping is much more likely to keep the person's head intact!

Deleting an uploaded image

To delete an uploaded image click on the Delete button next to the image you would like to remove.

Watermarking an image

There are no watermarking features built directly into eHive. There are both free and commercial watermarking tools available, with the free options offering less control over the position and size of the watermark. Typical watermarking software allows you to add a standard text or icon disclaimer and apply it in bulk to a set of images.

Within eHive the public only have the option of viewing a relatively low resolution copy of the image. The public eHive site also clearly marks the licence for each record. Because of this we recommend not watermarking the images as this detracts from the visitors experience. If a site wants to watermark images then this is just done as a step before uploading the images to eHive.
